There is no known cure for lipedema. Diets, medication, and diuretics do not lessen the physical or psychological effects that patients encounter on a daily basis. Compression therapy is the single most effective way to slow down or prevent worsening symptoms even in the early stages of lipedema.
How Does Compression Help?
- Encourages the flow of blood and lymph fluid to help prevent fluid retention and edema.
- Fluid within tissue is encouraged to move towards the root of the limb where it can be drained away more easily.
- Improves appearance of skin in the affected area.
- Reduces pain and discomfort in the limbs by supporting soft tissues and painful knee joints.
There is a wide selection of compression garments available to lipedema patients depending on coverage, compression class, appearance, custom-made vs. ready made, material, construction, suspension, and skin condition/sensitivity. Putting on and taking off a compression garment takes practice because some patients experience pain which can make it difficult. Most people find it easier to put on hosiery first thing in the morning, when the legs are at their smallest.
